Why is it important to be good at solving problems?

The world is full of problems, and very often the most successful people are the ones who are the best at solving them.
If you look at big businesses, they make a lot of money because they solve problems for people.
Businesses and workplaces are desperate to hire people who are brilliant at solving problems – because it will help them to solve problems for customers, and make money.
2. Helping your personal life 💖
Being good at solving problems can make you:
- A better friend and family member
Wouldn’t it be great to be the friend that everyone goes to because you’re so great at problem solving? Being able to help others solve problems can help you build great relationships.
- A better communicator
Different people prefer being communicated with in different ways, if you can adapt the way that you speak to others, it is easier to build positive relationships.
- More resilient
Life can throw lots of difficult problems your way. Being able to confidently solve them can help you to thrive and be resilient in difficult situations. Feeling like you can overcome problems easily can improve your wellbeing, and help you to feel more confident.
What do good problem solvers look like? 💃
A good problem solver:
- Is creative and has lots of ideas
- Works well in a team
- Listens to others
- Makes decisions confidently
- Tries new things
- Looks for opportunities to grow and change things
- Is resourceful
- Thinks ahead – what changes might happen in the future, and how can you be prepared for them?
- Thinks and speak positively – changes can be difficult, being positive makes it easier
- Is curious and open-minded
6 steps to solving any problem
1. What is the problem? – Break it down! 🔨
Problems can be big and complicated, which makes them feel scary and difficult to fix.
Start out by breaking up the problem into “mini problems”, which are easier to fix.
For example, imagine if the problem was:
“I feel sad”
There could be lots of mini problems leading to that feeling. They could break down into:
I’m sad because I:
- Feel tired
- Had a bad day
- Hurt my knee
- Lost my phone
Now you can focus on fixing each mini problem individually, to make it more manageable!
2. Research the mini problems 🕵️♀️
Understanding more about the problem will make it easier for you to fix it.
Let’s use the example: “I’m sad because I feel tired”
How could the mini problem have been caused?
Bad night of sleep?
Worked too hard?
Not drinking enough water?
How have other people fixed the mini problem in the past?
Visit the doctor?
Get to bed earlier?
Take a nap?
Using our research, we can come up with some great ideas for solutions to try.
3. Come up with ideas for solutions to try 💡
Looking at the mini problem, create a list of potential solutions.
- What can you do next if a solution fails?
- Will the solution create any other problems?
- Which solution do you think is the best?
4. Decide on a solution to try 🤔
Using your list of potential solutions –
- Decide which solutions are best
- Create a plan of what you will try
- Decide what you will do next if the solution fails
5. Try the solution ⚒️
If you’re feeling confident about what the problem is and how it can be solved – give your solutions a go!
6. Did it work? 🧠
If yes, congratulations! You’ve solved the problem.
If not, have another go! Evaluate why the solution didn’t work, and try again.
Not all problems are solved straight away, the main thing is to keep trying things until you get there!
